Call 112

Police help

For immediate danger, call 112. For police help, say clearly where you are and what has happened. In Spain you may be helped by Policía Local, Policía Nacional or Guardia Civil depending on the situation and area.

Ambulance / medical help

For serious illness, injury or an accident, call 112 and ask for an ambulance. Give your location first, then explain what has happened.

Fire help

For fire, smoke, gas, explosion risk or rescue, call 112. Move away from danger if you can do so safely.

Stay calm. Give your location first. Keep your phone with you. Ask someone nearby to help if you are struggling with Spanish.

Police names in Spain

You may hear Policía Local, Policía Nacional or Guardia Civil. If you are not sure which one you need, call 112.

Pharmacy / medical centre

For non-urgent help, ask for a farmacia, centro de salud or médico. For serious symptoms or danger, call 112.

What to say when calling emergency services

  1. Say where you are.
  2. Say what has happened.
  3. Say if anyone is hurt.
  4. Say if you need police, ambulance or fire help.
  5. Say you do not speak much Spanish if needed.
